This simple how-to guide will walk you through very quick steps to create an assignment within Canvas for which your students will submit portfolio entries from Portfolium directly into Canvas. There are quite a number of benefits of having your students submit their projects from Portfolium into Canvas including:

  • Allow your students to quickly submit their assignment that's already beautifully showcased on their portfolio by copying and pasting their portfolio entry URL into Canvas
  • View a multimedia preview of their work before clicking the link to view the full entry
  • Maintain a gallery of exemplary work within the Canvas class module

STEP 1: Create a new Assignment within Canvas

Inside of your Canvas class module, create a new Assignment under Assignments on the left side of the screen. On the Assignments page, click the "+Assignment" button.

Enter a title for your assignment, for example: Final Capstone Project.
Enter the details of your assignment, reminding your students to submit their portfolio entry showcasing their final capstone project.

STEP 2: Submission Type = "Website URL"

Select the Online Submission Type of Website URL.
This will allow your students to copy and paste their portfolio entry URL into the submission field.

STEP 3: Your students will copy and paste their portfolio entry URL into the submission field

Your students will see this screen on their end when they are submitting their final project within Canvas:

Your students will copy and paste their portfolio entry URL from Portfolium into the Website URL field to submit their portfolio entry. Once they submit, you will be able to view their submissions within Canvas and also click the "View in a new tab" link to view the entry in its entirety:

  • Follow the instructions set by your professors

STEP 1: Find your Assignment within Canvas

Inside of your Canvas course module, click the Assignments link.

You'll see your assignments listed on the right: Final Capstone Project.
Click on the assignment to open the details page:

STEP 2: Click the "Submit Assignment" Button

Click the blue Submit Assignment button in the top right.
You'll see that you're prompted to enter a Website URL in the textbox. Copy your portfolio entry URL from Portfolium and paste into this Website URLtextbox:

You can also enter a comment in the Comments textbox below the Website URL textbox.

STEP 3: Submit Assignment

Click the blue Submit Assignment button and you'll see the confirmation page:

Great job! You've submitted your final capstone project from Portfolium onto Canvas.

Your assignment submission will look awesome in your professor's Canvas grading view:

  • Allow your students to engage with portfolio entries from within Canvas
  • Keep the experience within Canvas, rather than linking off to Portfolium
  • Maintain a gallery of exemplary work within the Canvas class module
  • Play and view multimedia content from a portfolio entry within Canvas

STEP 1: Create a Page within Canvas

Inside of your Canvas class module, create a new Page under Pages on the left side of the screen.
On the Pages page, click the "+Page" button.

Enter a title for your page, for example: MAE101 Capstone Projects
Then click "HTML Editor"

STEP 2: Copy & Paste Code Snippet

Copy the HTML code below (including the "<" and ">" symbols):

Paste this HTML code into the Large Text Area window within Canvas's Create Page module.

STEP 3: Copy & Paste Portfolio Entry URL

Copy the portfolio entry URL from Portfolium and paste into the HTML window, replacing where it says "[INSERT URL HERE]" (including the brackets). Then click "Save".

Now the portfolio entry from Portfolium is embedded onto the Canvas class module:

Great job! You can add more entries by following this same process. Multiple entries can be added side-by-side using the same copy and paste steps from above, resulting in this:
