We created our Program Assessment product to help institutions measure the effectiveness of their learning programs.  This builds upon our Course-Level Assessment product by allowing programs to coordinate and execute a second set of reviews outside of the course using a different rubric and different reviewers.


Let’s start by clarifying the terminology that we use within this product.

  • Program:  The program through which students are learning
  • Learning Outcome:  The set of skills or competencies that should be obtained by students through the program
  • Course:  One of the ways that learning outcomes are delivered to students, typically within a program
  • Assignment:  Work that is performed by students (typically within a course), which can be used to demonstrate learning or competencies

To measure the effectiveness of a program, coordinators can create an assessment.  Within an assessment, coordinators can define one or more collections.  A collection is a group of artifacts (typically assignment submissions) that are to be evaluated using a rubric.  A sample set is a subset of the total artifacts within a collection.  

  • Assessment:  The activity of evaluating a program to measure student learning outcomes
  • Artifact:  A work sample that demonstrates the competencies learned by a student
  • Coordinator:  The persons responsible for defining and facilitating an assessment
  • Collection:  A grouping of similar artifacts that should be evaluated with the same rubric
  • Sample Set:  A reduction of the total number of collected artifacts within a collection
  • Evaluator:  The persons responsible for evaluating work within an assessment or collection
